Fire Chief Caufield: Before he departs for Cincinnati, maybe he can tell us what's up at East High?
Rochester Fire Dept. 'Trainee' Program is Unethical, & Unsafe.
Wednesday, September 8, 2010  Rochester, NY -  According to anonymous but reliable sources inside the Rochester Fire Department, a fire fighter trainee program administered at East High School allows functionally illiterate, unqualified high schoolers to earn a minimum of $16.00 per hour, as well as allegeldy placing themselves, qualified fire fighters, and perhaps the public, in jeopardy. Read More ...

Irony: Joe Morelle heads the Democratic Party but is no fan of competitive democracy for city voters
Why do Smugtown Elites Hate Democracy?
September 7, 2010  When the Who's Who of Smugtown fell into line behind Mayor Robert Duffy's goal of taking over the city schools, they blithely dismissed the anti-democratic consequences of their position. They focused on poorly-performing schools and a unanimously agreed-upon need for change. But now some of those same elites are floating another idea that takes power away from voters: a special election for Rochester Mayor that would likely freeze out most potential candidates. What is everyone so afraid of? Read More ...

In an effort to tie some of these thoughts together in advance of the 2010 elections, this author has tentatively reached the following conclusion: we are doomed. Read More ...

What Message Will 131st AD Dems Send?
September 1, 2010  In two weeks, voters in the 131st Assembly District (parts of Rochester, Wheatland, Rush and Chili) will identify the Democratic candidate for the November election. Unlike past years where incumbent Susan John held down the fort (sometimes with nail-biting margins), this year Democrats defend an open seat. This makes the September 14th primary even more important: will Democrats pick the candidate they think can hold the seat, a reformer, both or neither? Read More ...

Thursday, August 26, 2010  Rochester, NY -  Alcohol.  For centuries, the great social elixir, used to enhance the taste of food (wine), and to initiate the young (beer), as well as separate the men from the boys (liquor).  But would it surprise you to know that 25% of the average senior class, at the average American high school are binge drinkers; that computer and data processing workers have, by industry, the highest rate of heavy alcohol consumption; and, that consumption of the drug, alcohol, causes, by far, more violent acts by heavy users than any other drug, whether legal or illegal?  After reading this article, you might think twice about taking that next drink. Read More ...

Wednesday, August 11, 2010  Rochester, NY -  New York City bureaucrats, none of which, obviously, lost any friends or relatives in the 9/11/01 Muslim attacks on the Twin Towers, recently voted 9-0 to approve an Islamic Mosque and cultural center, a mere two blocks from Ground Zero.  These insensitive bureacratic clods found nothing historically significant in the 1850's-era building currently occupying the future site of a meeting place for Muslim moderates--and extremists.  Meanwhile, officials in Hamburg, Germany had the courage to close down the mosque where some of the 9/11 Islamic terrorists planned the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks.  Will President Obama or Mayor Bloomberg ever grow a pair? Read More ...

Judge Rules 52% of California Voters are Insufferable Twits Ignorant of the Law and Fundamental Rights
August 5, 2010  Federal Judge Vaughn R. Walker -- a Republican appointed by George H. W. Bush in 1989 -- has ruled that the 52% of California voters who supported a ban on gay marriage were wrong. Wrong, that is, in their legal view that such a ban is legal under the United States Constitution. How will Judge Walker's decision hold up on appeal? That all depends on whether "strict constuctionist" judges maintain their philosophy (which supports Walker's ruling) or whether they decide that "judicial activism" suddenly has a newfound appeal. Read More ...

Anatomy of a Bureaucratic Blow-Off
July 28, 2010  As some residents spent the last year running for school board and considering the issue of mayoral control, other residents were engaged in something more mundane -- but important to them: trying to get the city of Rochester to respond to basic code violations in their neighborhood. The Smugtown Beacon has acquired the email correspondence between a neighborhood group and their Neighborhood Service Center coordinator, Jose Cruz. In these communications, it is clear that the "buck stops here" is not a philosophy distributed uniformly throughout the city administration. If this is how the city responds to residents asking for code enforcement, how will it treat parents concerned about their child's school? Food for thought...

Monday, June 14, 2010  Rochester, NY -  A longtime Brockport realtor and landlord is a supporter of the Village dissolution vote on Tuesday, June 15th.  Yet Rich Miller is not a supporter of the Brockport Village Police Department, and on the eve of a vote to eliminate the political entity known as the Village of Brockport, Miller claims Brockport Police are corrupt.  Brockport Police Chief Dan Varrenti says those allegations could not be further from the truth. Read More ...

In case you missed the week's events, a blow-by-blow summary, with just a touch of Smugtown Beacon sarcasm: Cincinnatus abandons his plow, School Board members go existential on themselves, Florida's New Yorkers cry "Shut it down! Saturday, June 12, 2010  Rochester, NY -  The largest sporting event on the planet kicked off yesterday, for the first time ever, on the continent of Africa.  The 2010 FIFA World Cup began amidst the death of Nelson Mandela's  13 year old great-grand daughter, and her untimely demise in an auto accident; 94,000 soccer (futbol) fans at Soccer City, in Johannesburg, South Africa; and an unjust 1-1 tie in the opening match between Mexico and host South Africa (Bafana, Bafana).  Oh, and by the way, the Rhinos are home tonight against Crystal Palace Baltimore. Read More ...

Rochester Also Rising? Recent Economic Indicators Looking Up

Wednesday, June 9, 2010  Rochester, NY -  Greater Rochester has been battered for decades by outrageously high taxes, massive Kodak lay-offs (62,000 employees in 1983; 8,000 or less today), & an intractable 'brain drain' loss of our college graduates to other states and regions.  Yet, recently the Greater Rochester Enterprise (GRE), and the world renowned Brookings Institution have issues reports that demonstrate that, despite our community wide, collective low self-esteem, Greater Rochester may indeed be entering an era of job growth and population stabilization.

Could the 133rd Assembly District (David Gantt's) be Competitive?
June 6, 2010   Much has been written about the disgruntled state of the American electorate in 2010. This publication has endorsed a clean sweep of all incumbents to send the message that change is needed. But in the 133rd Assembly District, represented since 1983 by Assemblyman David Gantt, is it even conceivable that the dean of Rochester's state delegation could be vulnerable to a challenge? In a word, yes.

Monday, March 22, 2010  Johannesburg, South Africa -  A new friend of mine from the Rosebank section of Johannesburg claims South Africa is about "50 years behind the U.S." in terms of race relations, equality, and access for poor blacks to education and jobs.  And she's white.  Many Zulu and other black indigenous people I've interviewed feel similarly, yet still other South African blacks think some aspects of society and government were run better during Apartheid.  Like in the Twilight Zone, nothing is as it seems.  This is the South Africa of 2010, so be near a TV on June 11th to see if President Jacob Zuma's A.N.C. government can pull off sporting's biggest event.

Duffy Provides Latest Lessons to City on School Governance
March 19, 2010  In his latest treatise on school governance, Rochester mayor Robert Duffy has provided some interesting lessons for the children of Rochester. They appear to include things such as "always be sure to take cheap political shots at people who disagree with you" and "when proposing something people will not like, bury it in pretty-sounding rhetoric." If Rochester's children study the mayor closely, one day they too can grow up to become people who speak pretty words but do little to lead their community. We Rochesterians certainly seem to have an endless appetite for those types.

U.S. Government Spending Up 221% Since 1970: "Unsustainable", expert states.
Thursday, March 18, 2010  Johannesburg, South Africa -  The Chief Investment Officer of Cannon Asset Management cites statistics that show while American median household income has risen 32%--in real terms--since 1970, American public sector spending has skyrocketed a whopping 221% in the same 40 year period!  And now the imminent Congressional passage of President Obama's health care reform package threatens to balloon the federal deficit and debt even more.  When will this immature, adolescent, drunken sailor-like governmental spending spree ever be reigned in?

Op-Ed Briefs: Fire Chief Allegedly Threatens "Budget Bill's" Life; South Africa, After the Fall.
Tuesday, March 16, 2010  Johannesburg, South Africa -  Embattled Rochester Fire Chief John Caufield can be heard on secret audio tape recordings, obtained anonymously by WHEC TV-10, seemingly threatening the life of City Hall Budget Director Bill Ansbrow.  Caufield made the allegedly threatening remarks at a fire hall last December, 2009.  Post-Apartheid life all over South Africa has been no picnic for the white minority, but has been far worse for Zulu's and the black majority.  The following are a few hair curling, revolting examples that will make you damn glad, recession or not, that you reside in the United States. Read More ...

A Tale of Two Republican Parties
March 15, 2010  It was the best of times, it was the worst of times... For the Monroe County GOP, it is unclear which era the party is in. Is this the middle of a GOP ascendancy for Monroe County? Or is the party facing insurmountable challenges in the near-term that might put the party on the verge of extinction?

Friday, March 12, 2010  Johannesburg, South Africa -  So Democrat Eric Massa has resigned from his seat in Congress.  While I am a Republican, this does not make me happy, fore additional shame has been visited on the residents of the 29th Congressional District (C.D.).  Massa's predecessor, Republican Randy Kuhl, was elected to the same district, even after the media and public knew that Kuhl had brandished a fire arm, against his wife!  What--and who's--next for the taxpayers of the 29th C.D.? Read More ...

RCSD Graduation Rate Dips to 46% -- What will the Pollsters Say?
March 10, 2010  Regardless of the technical details behind how New York State defines a graduation rate, no one can defend the recent 46% rate reported for the city of Rochester's public schools. Just a day prior, the Center for Governmental Research (CGR) announced it would team up with a polling firm to conduct a poll of Rochester residents on the subject of mayoral control. What do these two events mean for supporters and opponents of mayoral control?

Should She or Shouldn't She? Is Maggie Brooks "Right" for the 29th CD?
March 7, 2010  The temptation to run for Congress is almost irresistable for politicians. It represents the opportunity for a national political stage, the role of local political kingmaker (and hander-outer of political patronage and federal money), not to mention a healthy pension and insurance plan. But before Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks prints her new business cards, she should think long and hard about the possible consequences of her seeking a seat in the House.

Rochester's Deck of Political Cards in for a Major Shuffle in 2010
March 4, 2010  For the first time in a generation, the Rochester area could see unprecedented change in the cast of political actors in 2010. With the 29th Congressional District and the 131st Assembly District up for grabs, announced intentions to challenge incumbents for state legislature and a general sense of anger and anti-incumbency mood among voters, Rochester's political landscape could be shaped by an electoral earthquake in 2010. Inside, a preview of some of the major faults that could open wide.

A Retraction: Former ESL-MCC Sports Center Article Should Not Have Included Quotes by Paul H.
Monday, March 1, 2010  Rochester, NY -  Journalist Ryan Whirty recently published an article about the former ESL-current Sports Centre at MCC.  The human subject of his article, Paul H., of the Monroe County Economic Development office was misquoted, and worse, did not give permission to Mr. Whirty to use any comments about the failing ice arena on the campus of Monroe Community College.

Moreover, the Smugtown Beacon is reluctant to acknowledge even the occurence of any interview between Paul H. and Ryan Whirty.  As you may have noticed, we have pulled the article in question, and apologize to our readers, and especially to Paul H. for having printed the article in the first place.  Thank you.

How the News Business Makes the News
February 27, 2010  It could be argued that the New York Times ended Gov. David Paterson's campaign for governor. While  Paterson did not help his cause any by intervening (allegedly) to help his close aide avoid legal trouble, it was the vague threat of a future story in the Times that led the most recent media frenzy. This choice by the Times' editors and publishers is one of several that make the media a full participant in politics -- not an objective observer. For more local examples, read on...

An interesting stance from a trio who either do not live in the city or do not vote regularly.
